Long healthspans mean happy lives

Jack LaLanne dies at 96

24th January 2011

Fitness guru Jack LaLanne, who inspired television viewers to trim down and pump iron decades before exercise became a national obsession, has died at age 96.

His agent Rick Hersh says LaLanne died of respiratory failure due to pneumonia Sunday afternoon at his home in Morro Bay on California’s central coast.

He said, “The only way you can hurt the body is not use it.” He maintained a youthful physique into his 80s. In fact, for his 80th birthday LaLanne swam a mile and a half in Long Beach Harbor, in shackles and handcuffs, pulling 80 boats with 80 people. I think it was a person per boat.

He was more active at 96 than many people of any age. Jack LaLanne truly define the word healthspan (though the word wasn’t invented until he was 90 or so). An inspiration who will be missed, not forgotten.
