There Are So Many Benefits When You Quit Smoking

27th November 2006

When you smoke, you probably think often about quitting. However, it is just so easy to continue, to not have to worry about the withdrawal symptoms, and say you’ll quit tomorrow. You will find that, as with so many other things in life, the hardest part of quitting is saying to yourself “I want to quit smoking”, to actually mean it, and to be willing to do anything to reach that goal.

However, look at the following! These little snippets of information may change your mind:

1. Your chance of a stroke drops to the level of a person who never smoked a cigarette after quitting for only 5 to 15 years.
2. Your chance of developing cancers of the mouth, throat and esophagus drops by half after quitting for only 5 years.
3. Your chance of developing cancer of the larynx drops after quitting.
4. Your chance of developing coronary heart disease drops by half after quitting for only 1 year! The risk drops almost as low as a person who never smoked a cigarette after 15 years.
5. Your chance of developing lung cancer drops by almost half after quitting for only 10 years.
6. Your chance of developing an ulcer drops after quitting.
7. Your chance of developing cancer of the bladder drops by half after quitting for only a few years.
8. Your chance of developing cancer of the cervix drops after quitting.
9. Your chance of developing peripheral artery disease drops after quitting.
10. Your chance of having a low birth weight baby drops to normal if you quit before you get pregnant or during the first three months of pregnancy.

If the health benefits are not enough to sway your decision, think about these:

1. All the money you will save because you don’t have to buy cigarettes.
2. All the time you will gain by not taking “smoke breaks”.
3. How much better your home, hair, clothes, and breath will smell.
4. That quitting sets a good example for your children!

Tomorrow isn’t soon enough. The time to quit is today.
